Zoning & High-Velocity Systems

If the upstairs bedrooms are hot while the family room is cold, or your house simply has no room for conventional ductwork, one of these systems is usually the answer.

Zoned heating and cooling

Zoning splits a home into areas, each with its own thermostat. Motorized dampers in the ductwork — or zone valves on a boiler — send heating or cooling only where it's called for.

• Separate control for floors, additions and bedrooms
• Less energy spent on rooms nobody is using
• Works with furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps and boilers

High-velocity systems

High-velocity systems, such as Unico, move conditioned air through small flexible tubing and discreet round outlets. The tubing fits through walls and between joists where full-size ducts won't, which makes central air possible in:

• Older homes, including those heated by boilers and radiators
• Finished spaces you don't want to open up
• Homes where architecture rules out soffits and chases

They pair with high-efficiency outdoor units and dehumidify well, which matters on humid Chicago summer days.
